PROTECTION FOR IMMIGRANTS, I-2017-07

A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE INITIATIVE PETITION for INITIATIVE MEASURE CONCERNING IMMIGRATION 2017-07 and the ORDINANCE PROTECTING THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF ALL COUNTY RESIDENTS, REGARDLESS OF NATIONALITY, PLACE OF BIRTH OR IMMIGRATION STATUS  

WHEREAS, the mission of the San Juan Island Grange is in part to support a resilient community of growers, makers, and keepers; and

WHEREAS, a resilient community requires a level of self-governance based on relationships of trust, respect, and open communication between County employees, elected officials and residents; and

WHEREAS, policies that keep families intact are preferred to those that break up families; and

WHEREAS, the Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson has provided Washington counties and cities with a document entitled Guidance Concerning Immigration Enforcement, which sets forth practices to help foster a relationship of trust between local agencies and immigrants and which encourages counties and cities to adopt ordinances which implement those practices,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the attached ORDINANCE PROTECTING THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF ALL COUNTY RESIDENTS, REGARDLESS OF NATIONALITY, PLACE OF BIRTH OR IMMIGRATION STATUS be enacted by the San Juan County Council without alteration, or, if not so enacted, be submitted to a vote of the residents of San Juan County.
