DESIGN HAS BEEN FINALIZED, THANKS TO NINA LEBARON AND JOHN GRESSETH.The deck will extend along the waterside wall of the main hall and out to eight feet beyond the kitchen wall. Stairs will lead down to our basement door, and a catwalk will tie the deck to the town’s path to the waterfront. Doors will lead from the main hall and kitchen to the deck. The deck surface will be concrete pavers so that we may use propane appliances such as grills and crab cookers on it.
MALCOLM SUTTLES, IN COLLABORATION WITH DAVID MEILAND AND JOHN GRESSETH, HAS DEVISED A WAY TO RAISE THE HALL TO PUT A PROPER FOUNDATION UNDER IT. That’s the Grange Hall wall that the deck is attached to. We have had work parties to remove the skirting to expose the ancient log posts that the Grange Hall sits on. A work party in early 2016 will complete the foundation phase so that we will be ready to frame the deck.
THIS PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH VOLUNTEER LABOR. We have plenty of talent among Grangers and friends of Grangers that we can complete this project as long as we have the cash to buy the materials. Thank you Carter Fuehr-Bush, Malcolm Suttles, Eric Gieger, Steve Ulvi, John Fox, Boyd Pratt, Roger Ellison, Meagan Jones, and Tim Hoke.
WE ARE ASKING FOR DONATIONS AND CONDUCTING FUNDRAISERS TO RAISE $20,000 TO AUGMENT OUR BUILDING FUND. We have received $700 from seed sales thanks to Alice Deane and Roger Ellison, $1100 from pie sales thanks to Katy Nollman, Lori Ann David and Deirdre Morris, will be selling jars of blackberry jam thanks to Doug Rowan and Carter Fuehr-Bush. Donations and fundraisers are approaching the $5000 target that will be matched by a generous Grange family. We will make a public announcement when we reach $10,000.
AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE A VENUE FOR COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS AND PROGRAMS. OUR DECK WILL MAKE THE SAN JUAN ISLAND GRANGE HALL AN EVEN BETTER COMMUNITY RESOURCE. WITH YOUR HELP IT WILL BE READY FOR ITS FIRST PARTY IN THE SUMMER OF 2016!
